Since I am not expecting it to sound like a typical drum set, it has a bit of a novelty sound to me. I enjoy it more because it is unique sounding/feeling. Note that I didn't say the Breakbeat was better quality, rather I said I ENJOY playing my daughter's Breakbeat kit more. (And I do have a Gretsch Brooklyn set that is fantastic, so I have nothing against Gretsch.) I actually really enjoy playing on my daughter's Ludwig Breakbeat kit much more than this Gretsch set. Maybe if i was playing only venues that miked up the kit, and they could eq in some fullness, it wouldn't be a problem.

It seems to have a very small tuning range, if you want a full, round sound. I didn't pay a lot for the kit, so I should be happy with it, and it's a fine practice kit, but I guess I was hoping for more. The rack tom holder/bass drum mount just feels unstable and like it is torquing the bass too much. My kick moves around quite a bit, whereas I have never had that problem with any other modern drum set. Very little depth, roundness or "boom" if you go above medium-low tuning Mushy, indistinct sound at times - this, to me, is the biggest drawback of the kit and the reason I think it is a mediocre set. Good build quality for the price- edges were all goodĭoesn't look cheap - the natural satin could easily be seen on a higher level kit Stays in tune a long time - actually much longer than any other kit I have riously (I bought an extra 16" floor tom, since I typically play a 1 up 2 down configuration.Įasy to tune- takes very little time compared to my much more expensive kits

My kit is a 20/16/14/12 with matching snare in the natural satin. I have a new set of the Catalina Club's that I purchased for my drum studio a few months ago.
